The United Nations Security Council has the primary responsibility of maintaining international peace and security. The Security Council is tasked with determining the existence of threats to the peace or acts of aggression. It calls upon the parties of a dispute to settle it by peaceful means and recommends appropriate methods of adjustment or terms of settlement. In some cases, the Security Council is permitted to impose sanctions or even use force to maintain or restore international peace and security.
Under the Charter of the United Nations, all Member States are obligated to comply with Council decisions. The Security Council currently has 15 Members, with each Member being given one vote.
